Iggy Pop, Redd Kross to headline Oakland’s Burger Boogaloo

The Independence Day holiday weekend seems like the perfect time to hold a festival called Burger Boogaloo. After all, millions of burgers will be gobbled up during Fourth of July celebrations. But Burger Boogaloo is not about food; it’s about music. Put on by the good folks at Burger Records and taking place July 1-2 at Mosswood Park in Oakland, California, this year’s Burger Boogaloo will feature headliners Iggy Pop, X, the Buzzcocks, Redd Kross and Guitar Wolf, with the whole shebang being hosted by outré actor and film director John Waters.

Here’s a look at the daily lineups:

Sat. July 1

It’s Iggy Pop, the perennially shirtless godfather of punk, who’ll be headlining the first night of Burger Boogaloo, and fans will also get a real treat immediately before Pop takes the stage. The much-revered Redd Kross will play before Iggy and they’ll have Dale Crover of the Melvins sitting in on drums. Having also played the first ever Burger Boogaloo, Redd Kross are a festival favorite. Coming all the way from Japan to shake up the Bay Area with their fiery brand of garage rock will be Guitar Wolf. A solid lineup of NoBunny, Baby Shakes, Bloodshot Bill, Personal & the Pizzas, Wounded Lion, Losin’ Streaks, Vertigo and Car Crush are also part of the day’s fun.

Sun. July 2

The day’s buzz will be provided appropriately enough by the great British punk band the Buzzcocks, who were on the punk scene in its nascent days when the Clash and the Sex Pistols were all the rage. A legendary American band is on the roster too, as the Los Angeles based X will perform. The quirky NRBQ will play; they’ve been honing their chops for over 50 years. Another blast from the past is Roy Loney, the front man for the Flamin’ Groovies, a longtime local favorite that originated in San Francisco. Rounding out Sunday’s lineup are Quintron & Ms. Pussycat, La Luz, Jacuzzi Boys, Glitter Wizard, FM Knives and Patsy’s Rats.

There will also be a series of musical performances taking place at parties at Eli’s Mile High Club; these events are $5 at the door:

Fri. June 30 – Burger Boogaloo Kickoff Party

This pre-festival party will feature entertainment from Control Freaks (Ex members of Rip Offs), Knights of Trash, Jinxes and Hollywood Sinners

Sat. July 1 – Burger Boogaloo After Party

The music keeps playing with shows by Rick Agnew (Adolescents), Mind Meld, White Night, Mama and Isaac Rother & the Phantoms

Sun. July 2 – Burger Boogaloo Closing Party

The fun wraps up with music from Apache, Sam Flax, Sarah Beth Nelson and Friendless Summer

Ten food vendors will be on hand and vegan food will be an option. Burger Boogaloo is an all-ages event but there will be a beer garden for those 21 years of age and older. Mosswood Park is located at 3612 Webster Street in Oakland.
